Karl Baedeker was one of the first individuals to produce travel guides. They were published in his native tongue German. When he died in 1859, his three sons, Ernst, Karl and Fritz in successive order ran the business and made changes, which would eventually bring Baedeker handbooks a worldwide reputation, and the word Baedeker would become synonymous with travel guides. Karl Baedeker Junior published the first handbooks in English, while in 1872, Fritzs moved the Publishing House to Leipzig.
During the First World War, Baedeker lost their editor to the English editions, Dr. J. Findlay Muirhead who would become editor to the Blue Guide in England. The company faced its greatest setback during the Second World War when allied bombers destroyed its headquarters and archives. This would bring to an end the great Baedeker handbooks of old, which spanned over one hundred years. The Great Grandson of Karl Baedeker re-established the publishing house, which is still publishing Baedeker travel guides to this day.
